If you’re setting up a Sewage Treatment Plant for a factory, commercial complex, or housing society, the first real decision isn’t the size of the plant — it’s the technology inside it. MBR, SBR, and MBBR all treat sewage biologically and can meet CPCB discharge norms, but they differ sharply in space needed, running cost, effluent quality, and how forgiving they are of an inconsistent operator. Picking the wrong one means either overpaying for treatment you didn’t need, or under-delivering on water quality your site actually requires.
MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)
MBBR treats sewage using bacteria that grow on free-floating plastic media inside the reactor, rather than relying purely on suspended sludge. This gives it a compact footprint and forgiving operation — it handles load fluctuations reasonably well and produces less sludge than conventional activated sludge systems (typically 0.3–0.5 kg TSS per kg BOD removed). It’s the most widely used technology for building-scale and packaged STPs in India today, with running costs typically in the ₹8–12 per KL range. It’s a strong fit where space is limited and the water is going to disposal or basic reuse like gardening and flushing, not high-purity reuse.
SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor)
SBR treats sewage in timed batches — fill, aerate, settle, and decant all happen in the same tank in sequence, rather than across separate tanks. This makes it particularly good at handling variable influent flow, which is common in commercial and institutional settings where usage swings between day and night. Because it treats in batches, SBR typically needs an added equalization tank to buffer continuous incoming flow, which pushes its overall footprint above MBBR’s even though the reactor itself is compact. SBR is CPCB-compliant and remains the dominant choice for larger municipal and commercial-scale plants, at a similar operating cost to MBBR but generally 15–30% higher capex per KLD. It also produces more sludge than MBBR — around 0.5–0.7 kg TSS per kg BOD — closer to a conventional activated sludge process.
MBR (Membrane Bioreactor)
MBR combines biological treatment with ultrafiltration membranes, producing the highest effluent quality of the three — often clean enough for reuse in cooling towers, flushing, or gardening without additional tertiary treatment. That quality comes at a cost: MBR has the highest operating expense of the three, roughly ₹20–35 per KL, driven by membrane cleaning, replacement, and energy use. In exchange, it eliminates the clarifier altogether, giving it the smallest overall footprint of the three — often 30–50% smaller than a conventional layout. It’s the right call when reuse is the goal, discharge norms are especially strict, or space is too tight for a larger conventional footprint.
